Memorial Day Weekend Camping Trip, 2017

Camping & Hiking Fun at Houston Mesa Campgrounds & Water Wheel Falls

What an incredible weekend camping trip. Great friends, beautiful scenery, and a nice camping spot. I may not like Arizona for the flesh melting heat, but the hundreds of beautiful destinations all within a 1-2 hour drive from Phoenix makes living here worth it.

The campgrounds are very close to Payson just north of the 263 with dozens of spots at only $8/night for each vehicle. It is very clean with coin operated showers, flushing toilets that are kept very clean and friendly camping hosts.

With all of the trees, you can’t see the other tents that are set up, which makes this spot really great for privacy from even your own camping spot. The nights were pretty cold still, but the clear night sky made for some nice astrophotography.

We even had some fun with sparklers and glow sticks!

Our second day we headed 6 miles Northeast of the campgrounds to Water Wheel Falls. There is so much to see along this hike that we didn’t make it all the way to the big waterfall, but everyone had a blast. Played in the freezing cold water, did a little rappelling, and lots of people watching.

Dexter had a blast playing in the water and picking up rocks out of the river. He still won’t go very deep in, but he loves playing near the shore.

Enjoy the rest of the photos and hopefully, you’ll add this trip to your Must Do list!!

See you out there!!
